Supreme Court reviews Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case

Supreme Court to hear Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case today

The Centre has asked the Supreme Court to address issues with the West Bengal government’s failure to provide adequate support to the CISF, which is responsible for security at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Supreme Court will hear the case today regarding the rape and murder of a junior doctor at this hospital.

The court session will be led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, starting at 10:30 AM. The Union home ministry has raised concerns about the state government's alleged lack of cooperation, calling for a court order to ensure full support for the CISF. They have requested that contempt proceedings be initiated if state officials do not comply with the Supreme Court's directions, citing "wilful non-compliance."

Controversy and task force formation

On August 22, the Supreme Court criticized the Kolkata Police for their delay in registering the case of the trainee woman doctor who was raped and murdered. This case has caused significant distress and controversy.

On August 20, the Court formed a 10-member National Task Force to create safety protocols for doctors, highlighting the national importance of their safety.

The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when a trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sanjay Roy has been arrested in connection with the crime.
